David had promised him that David would always take care of the posterity of\u00a0Jonathan. After he perished, there was only one alive and his name was Mephibosheth (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/29\/2-samuel-4\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">see our study of 2 Samuel 4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). His heritage is thus:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He is the grandson of King Saul and son of Jonathan who was crippled as his nurse fled and dropped him after the overthrow of Saul\u2019s kingdom (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%204.4-6&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 4.4-6<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>After the overthrow of the kingdom, he was raised\u00a0by Machir\u00a0who was a powerful leader among the tribes\u00a0on the eastern side of the Jordan River (transjordan). He also provided assistance to David in <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%2017.27-29&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 17.27-29<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> (2 Samuel 9.4-6)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>He was sought out and honored by David because of David\u2019s promise to Jonathan in <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Samuel%2020.14-17&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">1 Samuel 20.14-17<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> (2 Samuel 9.1-13)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>He was accused\u00a0by Ziba of attempting to overthrow the kingdom of David when Absalom rebelled (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%2016.1-4&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 16.1-4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>He explains his side to David (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%2019.24-30&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 19.24-30<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>He was spared by David (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%2021.7&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 21.7<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>He was the father of Micha (2 Samuel 9.12)<\/li>\n<li>He was called\u00a0Merib-Baal (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%20%208.34&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">1 Chronicles 8.34<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>David remembers the promise made to Jonathan after he had conquered and won many battles and became settled (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%208.1&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 8.1<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). We can see this because Mephibosheth\u00a0had a son (12) by this time. Since he was five when all this happened, some eighteen years could have passed, giving Mephibosheth enough time to marry and have a child.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>What David did for Mephibosheth\u00a0was not what the kings of ancient times did. They would slay all who were potential rivals (even in their own household). David not only spared Mephibosheth\u00a0but gave him a home even though Mephibosheth\u00a0could give nothing in return. Isn\u2019t this much like what God does for us? He doesn\u2019t slay us, but in His grace offers us who are crippled by our sin an eternal habitation fit for a king.<\/p>\n<p>David lived his life with all his ups and downs according to the purpose for which God created him (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%2013.36&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Acts 13.36<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). This is one of those instances where David served God\u2019s purpose. We will see later that David falters a few times, but, in the end, he serves God\u2019s purpose. How about you?
