{"id":749,"date":"2012-04-07T12:40:41","date_gmt":"2012-04-07T19:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teach4god.com\/OTS\/?p=749"},"modified":"2014-04-02T05:33:27","modified_gmt":"2014-04-02T12:33:27","slug":"psalm-89","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/07\/psalm-89\/","title":{"rendered":"Psalm 89"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2089&amp;version=NASB\">Psalm 89<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0 (See Pastor David&#8217;s Sermon on <a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/sermons\/psalms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 89.1<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>This psalm struggles with the universal problem of God keeping His promises, much like Psalm 73 struggled with the prosperity of the wicked (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/14\/psalm-73\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">see our study<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The psalmist, <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/11\/introduction-to-the-psalms\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Ethan the Ezrahite<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, is referring to the Davidic Covenant which we will cover shortly when we cover 2 Samuel 7 (study to come later). He is complaining that God seems to have forgotten (39-47) His promises (1-38). He then prays that God will remember them (48-51) and ends with praise (52). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Even amidst all this doubt, the psalmist is reminded that God is a God who keeps His word (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Corinthians%201.18!20&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Corinthians 1.18\u201320<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%2015.8&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Romans 15.8<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>His commitment is incomparable because He is without equal (6)<\/li>\n<li>He is overwhelmingly faithful (8, 24, 33)<\/li>\n<li>The covenant with Him lasts forever (28\u201329, 36)<\/li>\n<li>His commitment is unbreakable and unalterable (34)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">This is how life always played out. We know the promises God has made, we do not see Him keeping them as we presume He should, we shake our fists at Him, then realize that He is God, He is Good, and He will keep His promises as we praise Him. After each section, the psalmist asks us to pause and think through the statements (Selah). When did you last consider the promises of God? If you have doubted whether He keeps them or not, why do you suppose you doubt Him? Have you offered prayers to Him for what He has promised to do, no matter how harsh?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Historical matters<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This psalm might have been written\u00a0when Jehoiachin (comp. verses 38-45 with <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Chronicles%2036.9&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Chronicles 36.9<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Kings%2024.10-16&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Kings 24.10-16<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">) was king and is the second chapter, so to speak, of Psalm 78 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/16\/psalm-78\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">see our study<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">) where God judged the northern kingdom. Here, it might be an indication of His judgment on the southern kingdom.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Rahab in verse ten does not refer to the ancestor of David but of Egypt (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/12\/psalm-87\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">see our study<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> in Psalm 87).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Music<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4mQka3qs5hs\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Open the Floodgates of Heaven (Let it Rain) by Michael W.
