{"id":641,"date":"2012-03-22T05:45:53","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T12:45:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teach4god.com\/OTS\/?p=641"},"modified":"2014-04-02T05:31:14","modified_gmt":"2014-04-02T12:31:14","slug":"2-samuel-5-1-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/22\/2-samuel-5-1-10\/","title":{"rendered":"2 Samuel 5.1-10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%205.1-10&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 5.1-10<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Due to the method of this study, in that we are attempting to do a chronological study of the events of the Old Testament, we are studying the first ten verses of 2 Samuel 5. These verses coincide with <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%2011.1-9&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">1 Chronicles 11.1-9<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">. We will look at 1 Chronicles 11 next before we return to complete 2 Samuel 5. For the remainder of 2 Samuel and the books of the Kings, we will work with simultaneously with the Chronicles.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This chapter provides the third anointing of David being king. Here it is an anointing by all the tribes\u00a0of Israel to be king over Israel.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%202.4&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Second Samuel 2.4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">\u00a0points to the Southern tribes anointing David king over Judah. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Samuel%2016.13&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">First Samuel 16.13<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">\u00a0is the most important anointing given by Samuel prophetically proclaiming David to be\u00a0the great and future king over all Israel. Verse two represents the people\u2019s belief that Samuel\u2019s anointing of David to be\u00a0king over all Israel was indeed an act of God anointing David. The Israelites were obeying God\u2019s will and proclaiming David the rightful king.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hebron is an important city in the life of Israel. It is here the patriarchs, except for Rachel, were buried (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Gen.%2023:2;%2025:9;%2035:27-29;%2049:29-33&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Genesis 23.2; 25.9; 35.27-29; 49.29-33<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). It is one of the oldest cities in the world that is still in existence. The Cave of Machpelah\u00a0is still there; however, it is covered by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Hebron_Ibrahim_Mosque.jpg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">mosque<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> (background information from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/Judaism\/machpelah.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Jewish Virtual Library<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>David is called\u00a0in verse two a shepherd and a ruler (or prince). When this terminology is compared to <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ezekiel%2034.23-24&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Ezekiel 34.23-24<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, we see a comparison to the coming Messiah. David, then, is a type of Christ who is to come. More will be developed on this concept at a later date. The term &#8220;Messiah&#8221; means &#8220;anointed one.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We see the years of David\u2019s reign given in verse five. David reigned more than forty years, from the age of thirty (Jesus\u2019 ministry began at thirty too) and he was king until he was in his seventies.<\/p>\n<p>The Jebusites\u00a0(those who dwelt in what is called Jerusalem today), were confident in their ability to defend their capital. They thought it was impenetrable (6). When a <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Topography-Jerusalem.jpg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">topographical<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">\u00a0map of the surrounding area is viewed, it is reasonable for the Jebusites\u00a0to think that the city was impenetrable. The Jebusites held this territory since the days of Joshua (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Joshua%2015.63&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Joshua 15.63<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). This is one reason David sought the city. God gave the city to David and to Israel (10). Remember, with God all things are possible if He desires them for us. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s plan of attack seems to be an attack on the water system of Jerusalem. Later, King Hezekiah would use this as a means of defense (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Chronicles%2032.2-4&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Chronicles 32.2-4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first mention of &#8220;Zion&#8221; found in the Bible is in verse seven.<\/p>\n<p>As <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Samuel%203.1&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Samuel 3.1<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">\u00a0reminds us, David\u2019s claim to be king grew greater than that of Saul; so, we see here in verse ten, that David became greater and greater because God was with him. Just as Saul became weaker because God had left him, so David became stronger because God was with him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Are you proclaiming the One who is greater than David, Jesus, as King of your life? If so, your faith and ability to do great things will increase. The more we lean on God and allow Him to rule our lives the greater our life will be primarily due to our living the life that He created for us to live. How strong are you today?
