1 Chronicles 5<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Genesis 46.8-9<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

This chapter is a continuation of the genealogies from chapters one<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span>two<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span>three<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>four<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(read these short accounts to gain a perspective on these lists). This list contains the descendants of Reuben (1-10), Gad (11-22), and the half-tribe of Manasseh (23-26). <\/span>Joshua 13<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0informs us that these were the tribes who settled on the eastern shore of the Jordan River.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although Reuben was the firstborn, he sinned against his father Jacob (Israel) by sleeping with Jacob\u2019s concubine (Genesis 35.22 and 49.3-4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>). This was tantamount to desiring to take Jacob\u2019s place. This will be shown in the study in 2 Samuel 1. Since Joseph was the firstborn of the wife Jacob loved (Rachel), he was given the place of firstborn. Verse ten reminds us that God did take care of the descendants of Hagar as God promised to do (<\/span>Genesis 25.12-18<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>). See verses 18-22 in this chapter for a reference to the Hagarites.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We need to remember that the battle is the Lord\u2019s battle, not ours. We are to be\u00a0prepared for war (Ephesians 6.10-17<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>), we are to be actively involved in faith (<\/span>1 John 4.4 and 5.4<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>), but the victory is always His (cf. verse 22).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because of Manasseh\u2019s exposure to and allowance of the idolatry of the nations that surrounded them, they gave into idolatry. Because of this, God judged them through the nation of\u00a0Assyria and they were carried\u00a0away into captivity by Tiglath-Pileser\u00a0(745-727). The Assyrian Captivity will be developed in a later post (2 Kings 15.29<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
