A parallel passage is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%2010.1-14&amp;amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1 Chronicles 10.1-14<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(cf. the study on <a title=\"1 Chronicles 10\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/20\/1-chronicles-10\/\">1 Chronicles 10<\/a>). A note on why the two books of the Chronicles were written. They parallel, for the most part, 1 and 2 Samuel. However, they are written after the return from the exile in Babylon as a reminder of what is necessary for success in the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>This is a gruesome death. Saul was pierced with an arrow. He knew he was to die. He asked his armor-bearer to finish the deed lest he be tortured (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges%209.54&amp;amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Judges 9.54<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>). He said he would not do it because his chief job was to ensure the king remained alive. Saul killed himself. The armor-bearer followed suit. This will play big in 2 Samuel 1. That day Saul&#8217;s sons died with him.<\/p>\n<p>The Philistines found their bodies and triumphed throughout the land. They hung the bodies on a wall in <a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Theater-at-Beth-Shan-1-Samuel-31.jpeg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Beth-Shan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Judges%201.27&amp;amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Judges 1.27<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>). Beth-Shan is about sixteen miles from what is known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Map-of-1-Samuel.jpg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Sea of Galilee<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0today (Sea of Chinnereth). It was later renamed Scythopolis\u00a0which roughly translates to &#8220;city of barbarism&#8221; or &#8220;sin city.&#8221; The men of Israel in Jabesh-Gilead found out, they stole the bodies and buried them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a short chapter highlighting the death of Saul and his sons on Mount Gilboa.
