These are, at times, a reaction to the circumstances God allows in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Writers of the Psalms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Asaph (Psalms 50, <a title=\"Psalm 73\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/14\/psalm-73\/\">73<\/a>, 74, <a title=\"Psalm 75\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/14\/psalm-75\/\">75<\/a>, 76, <a title=\"Psalm 77\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/15\/psalm-77\/\">77<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 78\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/16\/psalm-78\/\">78<\/a>, 79-83).\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">He was a Levite, one of the leaders of David\u2019s choir (<a title=\"new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%206.31-48&amp;version=NASB\">1 Chronicles 6.31-48<\/a>). He wrote twelve Psalms. He was considered\u00a0a propeht as-well-as a composer (<a title=\"new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Chronicles%2029.30;%20Nehemiah%2012.46&amp;version=NASB\">2 Chronicles 29.30; Nehemiah 12.46<\/a>)\u00a0 (Smith&#8217;s Bible Dictionary, 1997).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Ethan the Ezrahite\u00a0(Psalm 89)\u00a0was one of the four sons of Mahol, whose wisdom was excelled by Solomon (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Kings%204.31&amp;version=NASB\" target=\"_blank\">1 Kings 4.31<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%202.6&amp;version=NASB\" target=\"_blank\">1 Chronicles 2.6<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li>King David<\/li>\n<li>Korahite, a priest from the tribe of Levi. These were the gatekeepers and singers in the Temple according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%209.19;%2012.6;%2026.1&amp;version=NASB\">1 Chronicles 9.19; 12.6; 26.1.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A possible division of the Psalms can be in terms of the <a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Chart-of-the-Psalms-according-to-the-Torah.jpeg\">Pentateuch<\/a>. For example<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Psalms 1-41 reflect the Sovereign God of creation in Genesis<\/li>\n<li>Psalms 42-72 reflect the Redeeming God of Exodus<\/li>\n<li>Psalms 73-89 reflect the holy God whom we worship in Leviticus<\/li>\n<li>Psalms 90-106 reflect the God who is with us in our wanderings as in Numbers<\/li>\n<li>Psalms <a title=\"Psalm 107\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/29\/psalm-107\/\">107<\/a>-150 reflect the God of the Word whom we praise as in Deuteronomy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these divisions ends with a doxology, a blessing reflecting the theme of the previous chapters.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><em>Altaschith<\/em> means &#8220;Do not destroy.&#8221; It occurs in Psalms 57-59 and 75 (see our study of Psalm 57, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/05\/02\/psalm-58\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">58<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/11\/psalm-59\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">59<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/14\/psalm-75\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">75<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). Although the meaning is not clear, some have conjectured that it was a tune of a popular song. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2065.8&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Isaiah 65.8<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> seems to reference it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>Gittith<\/em>\u00a0may refer to a musical instrument created and used by the people of Gath.\u00a0 Since David stayed with them for a time, it seems plausible.\u00a0 This term is used in Psalms\u00a0<a title=\"Psalm 8\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-8\/\">8<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 81\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-81\/\">81<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 84\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-84\/\">84<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Higgaion<\/em> may refer to a musical interlude; a grand pause like <em>Selah <\/em>(Psalm <a title=\"Psalm 9\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-9\/\">9<\/a> and <a title=\"Psalm 92\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-92\/\">92<\/a>).\u00a0 In <a title=\"Psalm 19\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-19\/\">Psalm 19<\/a>\u00a0the term is translated as &#8220;meditate.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Jeduthun, meaning <em>praising<\/em>, refers to a Levitical family whose\u00a0duties were to organize the temple music service (<a title=\"new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Chronicles%2015.17,%2019;%201%20Chronicles%2016.41,%2042;%201%20Chronicles%2025.1,%203,%206;%202%20Chronicles%2035.15&amp;version=NASB\">1 Chronicles 15.17, 19;\u00a01 Chronicles\u00a016.41, 42; 1 Chronicles 25.1, 3, 6; 2 Chronicles 35.15<\/a>). Jeduthun\u2019s name is in the inscription found in Psalms\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/12\/psalm-39\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">39<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, <a title=\"Psalm 63\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/05\/04\/psalm-62\/\">62<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/15\/psalm-77\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">77<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/07\/psalm-89\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">89<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 These Psalms were written by others and were probably written specifically for his choir.<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Lily of the Covenant<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> (<a title=\"Psalm 60\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/14\/psalm-60\/\">Psalm 60 <\/a>and Psalm 88) might refer to a tune the psalm is to be sung to.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><em>Mahalath<\/em> is found in the title of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/14\/psalm-53\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Psalm 53<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <em>Mahalath-Leannoth<\/em> is found in the title of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/18\/psalm-88\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Psalm 88. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">The meaning of these words is uncertain as it seems with most of the superscriptions\u00a0in the Psalms. The thought is that mahalath\u00a0is a guitar, and that leannoth\u00a0has reference to the character of the psalm. Some see it as equivalent\u00a0to Ma\u00ebstoso, which is a direction for performers to play the passage in a majestic manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>Maskil<\/em> (or <em>Maschil<\/em>) is a term used to indicate\u00a0a psalm that was sung\u00a0at an annual festival.\u00a0 The NASB describes it as &#8220;Possibly <em>Contemplative<\/em>, or <em>Didactic<\/em>, or <em>Skillful Psalm&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0term means skillful instruction.\u00a0 It is used in thirteen psalms (Psalm <a title=\"Psalm 32\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-32\/\">32<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 42\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-42\/\">42<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 44\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/10\/psalm-44\/\">44<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 45\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-45\/\">45<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 52\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-52\/\">52<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 53\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-53\/\">53<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 54\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-54\/\">54<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 55\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-55\/\">55<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 74\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-74\/\">74<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 78\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/16\/psalm-78\/\">78<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 88\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-88\/\">88<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 89\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-89\/\">89<\/a>, and <a title=\"Psalm 142\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-142\/\">142<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A <em>Miktam<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0a Hebrew word meaning \u201cwriting\u201d or \u201cpsalm\u201d and could mean that it is an epigrammatic poem or atonement Psalm. \u00a0It is found in the superscriptions for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%2016&amp;version=NASB#fen-NASB-14094a\">Psalm 16<\/a> and \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalms%2056\u201360&amp;amp;version=NASB\"><span id=\"yui_3_2_0_16_1330949960679501\">Psalms 56\u201360<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Psalm <a title=\"Psalm 16\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-16\/\">16<\/a>, 56, 57, 58, 59, and 60).\u00a0 These are Psalms written in the form of a prayer due to persistent danger.\u00a0 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2038.9-20&amp;amp;version=NASB#fen-NASB-18400a\"><span id=\"yui_3_2_0_16_1330949960679906\">Isaiah 38.9-20<\/span><\/a>\u00a0it is translated\u00a0as &#8220;writing.&#8221;\u00a0 Because the Septuagint translates it as &#8220;inscription,&#8221; it should be understood as &#8220;writing.&#8221;\u00a0 Since we do not have a clear understanding of the term, we should go with the interpretation found closest to the source itself unless the understanding contradicts other portions of Scripture.<\/li>\n<li><em>Muth-Labben<\/em>\u00a0may refer to the death (\u05de\u05d5\u05ea) of a son of David (Absalom)\u00a0or the death of Goliath or the death of a fool (a play on Laban&#8217;s name).\u00a0\u00a0 It is only found in <a title=\"Psalm 9\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-9\/\">Psalm 9<\/a>.\u00a0 It could also be a musical term indicating that soprano boys should sing this tune.<\/li>\n<li><em>Neginoth<\/em> means stringed instrument (Psalm <a title=\"Psalm 4\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/27\/psalm-4\/\">4<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 6\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/01\/psalm-6\/\">6<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 54\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/19\/psalm-54\/\">54<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 55\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/28\/psalm-55\/\">55<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 61\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/05\/03\/psalm-61\/\">61<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 67\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/17\/psalm-67\/\">67<\/a>, and\u00a076).<\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Nehiloth <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">or flute or other wind instrument with holes in it (<a title=\"Psalm 5\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/05\/08\/psalm-5\/\">Psalm 5<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>Selah<\/em>\u00a0is a musical term asking us to stop and pause in order to\u00a0reflect\u00a0on what has been said.<\/li>\n<li><em>Shemeninth<\/em> means &#8220;an eighth&#8221; and is unknown to us.\u00a0 It could mean an octave, a tune, or a pitch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Types of Psalms<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Imprecatory (<a title=\"Psalm 7\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-7\/\">7<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/20\/psalm-35\/\">35<\/a>, 40, 55, 58, <a title=\"Psalm 59\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/11\/psalm-59\/\">59<\/a>, 69, 79,\u00a0109, 137, 139, 144).\u00a0 These psalms are cries to God to bring destruction on those who stand against God and God&#8217;s people.<\/li>\n<li>Individual Lament (3, 4, 5, 6, <a title=\"Psalm 7\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-7\/\">7<\/a>, 12, 13, 22, 25, 26, <a title=\"Psalm 27\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/13\/psalm-27\/\">27<\/a>, 28, <a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/20\/psalm-35\/\">35<\/a>, 38, 39, 40, 42, 43, 51, <a title=\"Psalm 54\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/19\/psalm-54\/\">54<\/a>, 55, <a title=\"Psalm 56\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/14\/psalm-56\/\">56<\/a>, 57, <a title=\"Psalm 59\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/11\/psalm-59\/\">59<\/a>, 61, <a title=\"Psalm 63\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/20\/psalm-63\/\">63<\/a>, 64, 69, 70, 71, 86, 88, <a title=\"Psalm 102\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/21\/psalm-102\/\">102<\/a>, 109, <a title=\"Psalm 120\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/14\/psalm-120\/\">120<\/a>, 130, <a title=\"Psalm 140\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/15\/psalm-140\/\">140<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 141\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/15\/psalm-141\/\">141<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 142\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/15\/psalm-142\/\">142<\/a>, and 143).\u00a0 These psalms are passionate pleas to God for help in personal situations.<\/li>\n<li>National or Community Psalms of Lament (12, <a title=\"Psalm 44\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/09\/psalm-44\/\">44<\/a>, 58, 60, 74, 79, 80, 83, 85, 89, 90, 94, 123, 126, 129).\u00a0 These are passionate pleas to God for national deliverance.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">Nature Psalms (<a title=\"Psalm 8\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/03\/psalm-8\/\">8<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 19\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/06\/psalm-19\/\">19<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 29\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/11\/psalm-29\/\">29<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 33\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/11\/psalm-33\/\">33<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 65\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/16\/psalm-65\/ \">65<\/a>, <a title=\"Psalm 104\" href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/21\/psalm-104\/\">104<\/a>).
