The scene is Jerusalem where the crowds have gathered to celebrate the Advent of Israel\u2019s long-awaited Messiah. In the shadow of the temple, a soloist takes his place at the microphone, the choir standing behind him. A hush comes over the audience.<\/p>\n<p>118:1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0Oh, give thanks to the\u00a0Lord, for He is good!<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For His mercy endures forever.<\/p>\n<p>(All over the audience heads are nodding in hearty assent.)<\/p>\n<p>118:2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0Let Israel now say,<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHis mercy endures forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>118:3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0Let the house of Aaron now say,<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHis mercy endures forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Deep-throated \u201cAmens\u201d rise from the priests who are standing at the temple door.)<\/p>\n<p>118:4\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0Let those who fear the\u00a0Lord\u00a0now say,<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cHis mercy endures forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(At this, a company of God-fearing Gentiles bite their lips and fight back tears of gratitude for the grace that enables them to share in the glory of this moment.)<\/p>\n<p>118:5\u20139\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0I called on the\u00a0Lord\u00a0in distress;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0answered me and set me in a broad place.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is on my side; I will not fear.<\/p>\n<p>What can man do to me?<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is for me among those who help me;<\/p>\n<p>Therefore I shall see my desire on those who hate me.<\/p>\n<p>It is better to trust in the\u00a0Lord<\/p>\n<p>Than to put confidence in man.<\/p>\n<p>It is better to trust in the\u00a0Lord<\/p>\n<p>Than to put confidence in princes.<\/p>\n<p>(The crowd understands that this is the language of the faithful remnant of Israel, marvelously preserved by God during the Tribulation Period. They have learned to trust in God alone, and have lost their fear of men. At last they realize that it is better to trust in the\u00a0Lord\u00a0than even princes, that is, the best of men.)<\/p>\n<p>118:10\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0All nations surrounded me,<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0But in the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0I will destroy them.<\/p>\n<p>118:11\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me;<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0But in the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0I will destroy them.<\/p>\n<p>118:12\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0They surrounded me like bees;<\/p>\n<p>They were quenched like a fire of thorns;<\/p>\n<p>(Thornbushes make a spectacular blaze but die down quickly.)<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For in the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0I will destroy them.<\/p>\n<p>118:13, 14\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You pushed me violently, that I might fall, But the\u00a0Lord\u00a0helped me.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is my strength and song.<\/p>\n<p>And He has become my salvation.<\/p>\n<p>(The soloist is referring in verse 13 to the Antichrist and to his bestial treatment of the remnant for their refusal to buckle under to his demands. In the nick of time the Lord intervened and cast the false messiah into the lake of fire [Rev. 19:19, 20<\/p>\n<p>118:15, 16\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The voice of rejoicing and salvation<\/p>\n<p>Is in the tents of the righteous;<\/p>\n<p>(All over Israel there is unrestrained jubilation over the triumph of the Messiah. In every home the people are singing the following song of victory.)<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The right hand of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0does valiantly.<\/p>\n<p>The right hand of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0is exalted;<\/p>\n<p>The right hand of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0does valiantly.<\/p>\n<p>118:17, 18\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I shall not die, but live,<\/p>\n<p>And declare the works of the\u00a0Lord.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0has chastened me severely,<\/p>\n<p>But He has not given me over to death.<\/p>\n<p>(Speaking as the remnant, the soloist recalls the many pogroms against the Jews and their close calls with extinction. But the Lord miraculously rescued them from the mouth of the lion, and now they face the future with confidence and security.)<\/p>\n<p>118:19, 20\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Open to me the gates of righteousness;<\/p>\n<p>I will go through them,<\/p>\n<p>And I will praise the\u00a0Lord.<\/p>\n<p>(Redeemed Israel seeks admission to the temple courts in order to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving to the Lord. The sacrificial system will be partially reinstituted during Christ\u2019s reign with the sacrifices looking back to Calvary, that is, they will be commemorative.)<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This is the gate of the\u00a0Lord;<\/p>\n<p>Through which the righteous shall enter.<\/p>\n<p>(These are the words of those Levites who are doorkeepers at the temple. They explain that\u00a0this gate\u00a0belongs to Jehovah and is for the use of those godly ones who wish to draw near to Him.)<\/p>\n<p>118:21, 22\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I will praise You,<\/p>\n<p>For You have answered me,<\/p>\n<p>And have become my salvation.<\/p>\n<p>(Israel acclaims the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior.)<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The stone which the builders rejected<\/p>\n<p>Has become the chief cornerstone.<\/p>\n<p>(The Lord Jesus is\u00a0the stone.\u00a0The builders\u00a0were the Jewish people, and especially their leaders, who rejected Him at His First Advent. Now the people of Israel confess what Parker calls \u201cthe stupidity of the specialists\u201d as they see the despised Nazarene crowned with glory and honor. The rejected stone has become the Headstone of the corner [ASV]. There is some question as to whether the headstone is:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0the cornerstone of a building.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0the keystone of an arch.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0the topmost stone of a pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>Whichever is the correct view, the context demands the thought of highest honor.)<\/p>\n<p>118:23\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This was the\u00a0Lord\u2019s doing;<\/p>\n<p>It is marvelous in our eyes.<\/p>\n<p>(The choir represents Israel as acknowledging that it is Jehovah who has given the Lord Jesus His proper place in the hearts and affections of His people. The crowning day has come at last!)<\/p>\n<p>118:24\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This is the day the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has made;<\/p>\n<p>We will rejoice and be glad in it.<\/p>\n<p>(Barnes writes: \u201cAs if it were a new day, made for this very occasion, a day which the people did not expect to see, and which seemed therefore to have been created out of the ordinary course, and added to the other days.\u201d [p 173-174])<\/p>\n<p>118:25\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Save now, I pray, O\u00a0Lord;<\/p>\n<p>O\u00a0Lord, I pray, send now prosperity!<\/p>\n<p>(This is the verse which the people of Jerusalem quoted at the time of Christ\u2019s so-called triumphal entry; \u201cHosanna\u201d is the original word for \u201cSave now\u201d [Matt. 21:9]. But they soon changed their welcome to a call for His execution. Now, however, Israel is welcoming the Lord in the day of His power, and their sentiments are both sincere and lasting.)<\/p>\n<p>118:26\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0Blessed is he who comes in the name of the\u00a0Lord;<\/p>\n<p>(As the Lord approaches the temple area, the chief singer chants the blessing of the people in clarion tones. It is an historic moment. Centuries before, Jesus had warned the people of Israel that they would not see Him again until they said, \u201cBlessed is he who comes in the name of the\u00a0Lord\u201d [Matt. 23:39]. Now at last they gladly acknowledge Him as their Messiah and King.)<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We have blessed you from the house of the\u00a0Lord.<\/p>\n<p>(Perhaps this is the blessing of the priests, standing inside the door of the temple.)<\/p>\n<p>118:27\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0God is the\u00a0Lord, and He has given us light;<\/p>\n<p>Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.<\/p>\n<p>(The congregation of Israel worships Jesus as God and as the One who has brought light to their darkened hearts. As the procession moves toward the brazen altar, with Him at the forefront, they call for\u00a0cords\u00a0to\u00a0bind the sacrifice.)<\/p>\n<p>118:28, 29\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0SOLOIST:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You are my God, and I will praise You;<\/p>\n<p>You are my God, I will exalt You.<\/p>\n<p>(The Lord Jesus Christ is confessed as God by a people who formerly used His name as a by-word.)<\/p>\n<p>CHOIR:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Oh, give thanks to the\u00a0Lord, for He is good;<\/p>\n<p>For His mercy endures forever.<\/p>\n<p>(The song has risen to a crescendo of deep, deep praise and worship. The music reverberates through the surrounding streets of old Jerusalem.
