{"id":1205,"date":"2012-05-26T09:16:22","date_gmt":"2012-05-26T16:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teach4god.com\/OTS\/?p=1205"},"modified":"2014-04-02T05:26:29","modified_gmt":"2014-04-02T12:26:29","slug":"psalm-131","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/05\/26\/psalm-131\/","title":{"rendered":"Psalm 131"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%20131&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Psalm 131<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jesus said in <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%205.5&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Matthew 5.5<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, &#8220;Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.&#8221; He would later tell us in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2018.3&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Matthew 18.3<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, &#8220;Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven&#8221; (NRSV). Paul would remind us of the same ideal in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%2012.16&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Romans 12.16<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Corinthians%2014.20&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">1 Corinthians 14.20<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">. We are to have an attitude of childlike faith in this world of evil. When we look to ourselves as entities without need of help from another, we make ourselves god. Think about your life today. In what areas are you taking upon yourself and not bringing before godly counsel (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs%2015.22&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Proverbs 15.22<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">)and to God in prayer? This is, then, an area where you are making yourself into god. When we attempt to be gods, we stop God from operating in our life and things become frustrating, we become anxious, and we have no help (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%204.4-9&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Philippians 4.4-9<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, cf. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%204.6&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">James 4.6<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">. When we live in humility before Him, having the mind of Christ (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%202.5-8&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Philippians 2.5-8<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">), we find contentment (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Corinthians%2012&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">2 Corinthians 12<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). This is because our hope, our trust, our life, is in God. This is the essence of this short three-verse psalm. It directs our attention to our need for humility, our reliance or trust in God, and our only source of hope, which is solely found in God. Remember, hope is not wishful thinking but the full assurance that what God has said is and will forever be trustworthy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Verse one implies that David had not always been humble before God (think of our recent studies in 1 Chronicles with the <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/05\/18\/2-samuel-24\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">census<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">. David sought refuge in his military strength and not in God\u2019s omnipotence. David humbly submits his heart, eyes, and actions to God. He wants to live his life according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans%2012.1-2&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Romans 12.1-2<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20John%202.15-17&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">1 John 2.5-17<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">. A. W. Tozer\u00a0understood this when he wrote in &#8220;The Pursuit of God&#8221;: &#8220;Never forget that it is a privilege to wonder, to stand in delighted silence before the Supreme Mystery and whisper, \u2018O Lord God, thou knowest.\u2019&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Verse two mentions weaning. Weaning is resisted by the child because it longs for the closeness of the mother. However, without weaning there is no growth. We need to begin to feed ourselves and not rely on the milk of another to feed us.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Hebrews%205.11-14&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Hebrews 5.11-14<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> presents this truth quite well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, the question for us is where do we place our confidence?
