We can sense the men of David who deserted or lied to him when Absalom rebelled in this psalm. The men were Ahithophel\u00a0his counselor (4), Shemei\u00a0the one still loyal to King Saul\u2019s family (4), and Ziba\u00a0the servant of\u00a0the crippled\u00a0Mephibosheth (3).<\/p>\n<p>Another reference to <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/11\/introduction-to-the-psalms\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Jeduthun<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/12\/psalm-39\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Psalm 39<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/15\/psalm-77\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">77<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/04\/07\/psalm-89\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">89<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). A feature of this psalm is the word &#8220;only.&#8221; It is repeated six times. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My soul waits in silence for God only (1)<\/li>\n<li>He only is my rock and my salvation (2)<\/li>\n<li>They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position (4)<\/li>\n<li>My soul, wait in silence for God only (5)<\/li>\n<li>He only is my rock and my salvation (6)<\/li>\n<li>Men of low degree are only vanity and men of rank are a lie (9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The psalm is neatly divided into three parts by the <span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/02\/11\/introduction-to-the-psalms\/\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Selah<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/em><\/a><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">s <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">pause).\u00a0 T<\/span>he first two divisions begin with the same words with one replacement. &#8220;Salvation&#8221; in verse one is replaced with &#8220;hope&#8221; in verse five. This presents the one who has received salvation with the surety of its completion (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Hebrews%2011.1-2&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Hebrews 11.1-2<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">)<\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">.<\/span><\/em><em><em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verses 1-4-As seen above this portion\u00a0of the psalm is a complaint to God regarding those who have gone against David in his flight from Absalom in 2 Samuel 15. He is trusting in God to bring him safely through this matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Selah: Do you desire to wait patiently (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2040.28-31&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Isaiah 40.28-31<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%20103.1-5&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Psalm 103.1-5<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teach4god.com\/OTS\/2012\/03\/21\/psalm-103\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">see our study<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>])<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">\u00a0or let circumstances and people determine your life?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verses 5-8-David expresses what faith is and it is the essence of things hoped for. David knew that God would bring about His will and that God would be glorified and blessed through these dire circumstances. He then calls people to trust in God even as he does.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Selah: Do you proclaim God\u2019s work in you so that others can glorify Him too?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verses 9-12-David knew that man is temporary and that God is greater. This is the proclamation here.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Verses 9-10-The measure of a man is directly related to his relationship with God, which is then defined by his fellowship with God.<\/li>\n<li>Verses 11-12-God is a powerful God full of love and mercy. He provides each of us with spiritual gifts and other blessings. He demands that we use these to bless Him and others through Him. We will be judged according to what we have done (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%2025.31-46&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Matthew 25.31-46<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">). This is not a judgment of salvation but a critique of works we have done that He has called and created us to do (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%202.8-10&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Ephesians 2.8-10<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians%202.12-14&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Philippians 2.12-14<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When God states something twice as in this verse, it is emphatic. David is telling us to listen carefully (<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Job%2033.14&amp;version=NASB\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS; color: #0000ff;\">Job 33.14<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">. This is why Jesus would repeat &#8220;Amen&#8221; to His followers (Verily, verily). He was basically instructing them to listen up, pay close attention, because this will be on the test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>God is described in this psalm as<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rock (1-2, 6-7)<\/li>\n<li>Salvation (2, 6-7)<\/li>\n<li>Defense (2, 6)<\/li>\n<li>Glory (7)<\/li>\n<li>Refuge (7-8)<\/li>\n<li>Power (11)<\/li>\n<li>Mercy (12)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Who or what do you trust the God described above or men who are here today and gone tomorrow, men who we celebrate, oppressing others to get your way, stealing what you want because you cannot trust God to get to you what you need, or wealth?
