Psalm 45

What are we doing to make His name known throughout the world? It begins with us living our lives at home in such a way that our neighbors ask us about God. From there, His fame is spread through their testimony and ours.

Psalm 45

The origins of this psalm are unknown. What is known is that it was written for a royal wedding. The inscription informs us it is a love song, or a Wedding Song, set to the tune “Lilies.” This tune is mentioned in Psalm 69 (see our study) and Psalm 80. Again it is written by a Korahite (as mentioned in Psalm 44).

Two verses (6-7) are ascribed to Christ by the writer of Hebrews (Hebrews 1.8-9). Because of this, some have suggested, this psalm was written for the sole purpose of presenting a bride to Christ. This goes beyond the scope of Scripture and is afforded no other passage in Scripture. However, we can see this is a royal psalm and, thus, can be applied to Christ as well as the king it is addressed to in the inscription.

It is broken into four parts:

Verse 1-The call to write a poem. This is inspiration. God gives this to each of us. It may not be a poem; it could be a design, a future, or even a character. God gifts us, impassions us, and has created for us a purpose that is beyond us (Ephesians 2.10).

Verses 2-9-The call to the king emphasizing his majesty. The Targumim, an ancient Aramaic translation of the Hebrew, translates verse two: “Thy beauty, O King Messiah, is greater than that of the children of men.” The messianic verses (verses 6-7), address the King as God while the one who speaks is “God, Your God.” This is a conversation being carried on by God the Father and God the Son. God has anointed the Son for a particular purpose and this is salvation. Historically, the verse could also be translated as “Your throne is a throne of God.” This would mean it was established in righteousness.

Verses 10-15-The call to the bride to marry the king. She is told to forget her past and her heritage. This would imply that she is a foreigner. It holds true for us today as seen in Luke 14.26.

Going along with the messianic interpretation, she would represent the Gentiles or the Church (Ephesians 5.22-33). The Church or the Bride will be given the beauty of the King and is commanded to worship or pay homage to Him. This is presented in Revelation 19.1-10 as the Wedding of the Lamb.

Verses 16-17-The call to establish a lasting dynasty is given to the children of the King (Christians). We are to make His name known by the way we reflect His life and mission (Matthew 5.13-16).

This Psalm is ascribed to 2 Samuel 22.1-51. Although it is presented at this point in 2 Samuel, it is ascribed to God delivering David from his enemies including Saul. Since Saul dies in 1 Samuel 31, historically it would fit here in our chronological study of the Old Testament.

This is a Royal Psalm

This Psalm is ascribed to 2 Samuel 22.1-51. Although it is presented at this point in 2 Samuel, it is ascribed to God delivering David from his enemies including Saul. Since Saul dies in 1 Samuel 31, historically it would fit here in our chronological study of the Old Testament.

  • Verses 1-3-David gives God the praise for deliverance from his enemies. In the superscription, Saul is differentiated from David’s enemies. After all that Saul did to David, David still would not count Saul as one of his enemies. How do we treat those in our sphere of influence? Do we count all who are against us as our enemies, even if they once were friends? Do we give God credit for deliverance from all our enemies? When we stand at the end of the day, do we praise Him for bringing us through that day?

David also uses a strong word for love in these verses. Beyond this chapter, this love is used exclusively for God’s love for man. 2 Samuel 22 does not include this verse because it is more a public matter than the private matter of Psalm 18.

David sates that he will cause God’s glory to shine. This is the essence of “halal” or praise and is the root of hallelujah.

  • Verses 4-5-This verse reflects Psalm 116, in particular verse three. David expresses how he viewed life and how he perceived the situations in which he found himself. How honest are you before God about your life circumstances?
  • Verse 6-Again, David cries out to God expecting Him to hear David’s pleas. When we pray, do we think God will answer or even hear us?
  • Verses 7-15-These verses are reflected throughout the Scripture. Three places in particular are Psalm 29.3-9, Psalm 144.5-6, and Isaiah 30.30. The crux of these verses is that when God comes to the earth, it will be unmistakable that God is here. When we proclaim that we are believers, is it unmistakable for those around us?
  • Verses 16-19-God does deliver us from the hands of our enemies. Water in the Scripture usually denotes trouble. Do we lean on God or on our own strength to get us through the day? Paul reminds us that each day has enough evil of its own (Ephesians 5.16). In order for us to get through the day, we need to remember to call on the one who can set our feet on solid ground.
  • Verses 20-24-These verses seem to echo Saul’s words to David in 1 Samuel 24.19 and 1 Samuel 26.23. Could we say the same as David does here? Only in Christ. Romans 3.23-24 and Romans 4.23-24 remind us that only in Christ do we have righteousness.
  • Verses 25-30-Kevin Prosch put music to Revelation 15.3-4 and wrote “King of Saints.” I have not been able to find a recording of it. If someone has, let me know, it is worth listening to. Is our confidence solely in the hand of God or do we attempt to create our own strength and power? If the latter are true, we will fail.
  • Verses 31-42-Deuteronomy 32-33 and 1 Samuel 2.2 reflect the words that God is our Rock. Habakkuk 3.19 gives the picture of God placing our feet on firm ground.
  • Verses 43-45-David recalls what God has done for him and gives God the credit.
  • Verses 46-48-Once again, David gives God the credit and praises Him for all that He has done.
  • Verses 49-50-Romans 15 reminds us that we need to praise God wherever we go just as David does here (verse nine quotes this Psalm).

When the day is over, do we remember that it is God who enabled us to make it through the day? If so, have you praised Him for it? More often than not, when we are successful we take the credit (pride) and when we fail we blame God (pride).

1 Samuel 10-11

The Israelites proclaim that there is none like him. Are they judging him by his stature or by his character? Since not many people knew who he was, it appears as though the judgment was based on the outer appearance and not the inward appearance shining (Matthew 5.13-16 and Galatians 5.22-23). He was a Benjamite from Gibeah. Reread the end of Judges to recall the character of the men of that town and what happened to the Benjamites. Saul makes this city his capital.
We see in Scripture that when God does a new thing, He provides His Spirit. Although the Holy Spirit is not mentioned in this chapter, we do see that God “gave him [Saul] another heart.” Ezekiel 11.19 shows us when the Holy Spirit comes, He will give us a new heart not of stone but of flesh. When God introduces salvation in the book of Acts, the Spirit goes before the Apostles to open the eyes of the Jews, Samaritans, god-fearers, and the Gentiles to the Gospel.
A Special Note on the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts
a. The outpourings indicated that these particular people were called by God into His service.
b. The Holy Spirit indicated God’s claim on these people.
c. The initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit came on those Jews who already believed in Jesus (Acts 2).
d. A later outpouring came on the Samaritans showing the Christians in Jerusalem that these people were also a part of God’s kingdom (Acts 8).
e. Later, the Holy Spirit would be poured out on the Gentile Cornelius and those who gathered with him (Acts 10).
f. Later, the Holy Spirit came on religious people who followed John the Baptist as a sign that what they believed was now complete in Christ (Acts 19).
g. After this, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is absent from biblical literature.
Back to 1 Samuel 10. We see this is what happened with Saul as confirmation to the people that God chose him, due to the disobedience of the people (1 Samuel 10.17-19, cf. Romans 1 and how God gives us over to our sins), and as confirmation to Saul that what Samuel spoke at the beginning of chapter 10 was from God. This confirmation is prophesied in verses 1-8, fulfilled in verses 9-16, and accepted in verses 17-26.
This chapter shows that he had great promise as a king. He was humble (or shy) and loyal to his father and his work.
The chapter ends ominously with a few people rejecting his kingship and a king gouging the eyes of all Jews east of the Jordan River (Joshua reminds us of the two-and-a-half tribes who settle there–Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh). However, 7,000 men escaped with both eyes and they went to Jabesh-Gilead. This king, Nashan, in chapter 11 pursues the men who surrender to him. He accepts only if he can gouge their eye out. Saul is called to help. He is plowing a field (what a kingly duty).
Verse six tells us that the Holy Spirit came upon him. We need to understand the theology behind this statement. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit did not permanently dwell in people. He came and went, this is why David would cry out in Psalm 51 for God not to take the Spirit away. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is the guarantor of our salvation and He seals it thus never to be taken away from us.
Saul promises victory, has it and is renewed as king over all Israel with no murmurers.
Saul did great things in these chapters because of the presence of God in his life. What are we doing today that is great because of that same God who indwells us? How do people know we have been saved? What evidence is there in our lives that God lives in us? What works are we doing that manifest Him (Ephesians 2.8-10)? How is our light shining in this darkened world so that they can see God in us?
